Hayao Miyazaki Exhibit
ILLUSTRATION, GRAPHIC DESIGN
I was tasked to make an advertisement poster for a significant cultural/social event. I chose the Hayao Miyazaki Exhibit in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. I’ve always loved the whimsical, playful nature of Studio Ghibli films, and I knew there would be a lot of inspiration to draw from.

Hayao Miyazaki Exhibit
Process

My first draft idea was to combine an original sketch from the actual museum with a screenshot of the same scene from the movie. I created this initial draft with an iconic screenshot from Kiki's Delivery Service.
Draft 1
However, I was unhappy with this initial draft. The type was treated too much like an afterthought, and it showed.
In order to give the type space to breathe, I changed the poster to a vertical style. I created three drafts with screenshots from three of my favorite Ghibli movies: Ponyo, Spirited Away, and Kiki's Delivery Service
Draft 2
Though these new iterations were better, I was still unsatisfied. The posters lacked uniqueness, lacked Ghibli-ness. I wanted to do the theme justice.
Though daunting, I decided to start over. With a new illustrative touch, I was able to finally breathe life into this poster.

Draft 3
From here, I improved the overall composition and colors to create stronger impact. These new changes made the blanket easier to see, title more readable, and overall poster more focused.
